History Finds a Future

Objective & Impact:

Set along the Alabama River near Orrville and Selma, the Molette House is a circa-1825 plantation home with a remarkable history of survival and seven generations of family stewardship. Due to changing waterlines, the extraordinary decision was made to move the house, intact, to higher ground.

LG Squared was initially commissioned to develop an insulation and enclosure strategy. The project later expanded to include interior planning and preservation work that restored spatial clarity, improved light flow, and reestablished the kitchen as the home’s central gathering space.

The result is a comprehensive preservation effort combining deep energy retrofit, sensitive addition, and building-science-driven upgrades - honoring the home’s past while allowing it to function with the ease and resilience of a modern residence.

  • Legacy Restored by transforming a derelict structure into a renewed multi-generational home.
  • Outside-In Approach Applied to strengthen the enclosure while protecting original materials.
  • Spatial Flow Recovered through a more intuitive, connected layout.
  • Historic Fabric Respected while accommodating contemporary living.
  • Modern Performance Achieved with improved comfort, resilience, and long-term durability.
