A resilient Retreat in the Rainforest
A fascinating opportunity to create a "Zombie Apocalypse" retreat in North Carolina's hidden-gem rainforest.
Service:
Architectural and Interior Design
Scope:
New Construction
Location:
North Carolina

Objective & Impact:
This project began serendipitously when, after a nationwide search for a designer to realize their off-grid vision, the clients discovered LG Squared just two blocks away. The result is a deeply collaborative, self-sustaining retreat rooted in simplicity, independence, and connection to the land - designed to support everyday life with clarity and ease while comfortably welcoming family and friends without sacrificing privacy or autonomy.
LG Squared conceived the property as a complete living system, uniting architecture, landscape, and interiors into a cohesive whole.
- Living Pods + Courtyard support both privacy and hospitality, allowing guests to gather while maintaining separation from daily retreat life.
- Operational Efficiency introduces a shut-down strategy for unused pods, minimizing energy use and long-term maintenance demands.
- Site-Responsive Orientation positions each structure to optimize seasonal comfort, daylight, and views across the landscape.
- Renewable Energy Integration is achieved through a barn-mounted solar array supporting full off-grid performance.
- Water Stewardship utilizes a gravity-fed spring and storage system for reliable, low-impact distribution.
- Regenerative Landscape Design (with Shades of Green) establishes a permaculture-based food forest supporting long-term ecological resilience.
- Material Authenticity is expressed through durable, tactile finishes selected for longevity and environmental alignment.
